Sugar cane is a big part of our culture, cultivated in Jamaica on a commercial scale for centuries. The country depends on not only the sugar from the sugarcane but also on other by-products such as rum. Sugar cane is called “cane” in Jamaica.
Sugarcane belongs to the grass family.
Although cane juice is consumed locally, more people consume the joints of cane freshly peeled. Diabetic persons should get permission from a doctor before eating sugar cane. Sugarcane has a large percentage of water, fibre and other micronutrients. Do not eat sugar cane if you wear dentures (we called dentures false teeth in Jamaica), or dental implants.
I love sugar cane, especially the soft extra sweet ones. However, If I am counting calories, I leave sugar cane alone. Within an hour after peeling sugar cane, the colour will change from white to brown. Sugar cane juice sells in Jamaica, but I dislike it, I rather to eat the cane.
Not all sugar cane is sweet and not all is soft; you just have to know the sweet and soft ones. Some even eat spongy. The best time to buy sugar cane is in the summer, when there is hardly any rain falling.
