What is okra?


Okra, a relative of the cotton and hibiscus, is native to Africa but it is believed that it was brought to the Americas as food for slaves. Okra is a vegetable and can be eaten uncooked.

Okra Nutrition

Six okras only contain about 27 calories  It has a small amount of protein and fat but is a good source of calcium, potassium, vitamin K, carotene (used to form vitamin A in the body) and is an excellent source of the carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin. These antioxidants are shown to be positively related to eye health.

Jamaicans used okra to put in many dishes, to name a few; steam fish and okra. Ackee and salt fish with okra, okra and salt fish, I can go on and on. Jamaican men believe okra has an aphrodisiac effect. Therefore, it is blended with other ingredients to make a supposedly aphrodisiac drink. For example, okra blended with raw oats and Guinness then sweeten with condense milk and spice-up with grated nutmeg.
