My linseed drink is easy to make and very refreshing. Usually, linseed is boiled with Irish moss, and isinglass to make a drink that many Jamaicans considered to be an aphrodisiac. Linseed is packed with fibre, read about it here 

Irish moss is a dried-up-looking seaweed that is said to contain 15 of the 18 essential elements that make up the human body. This includes considerable amounts of calcium, iodine, sulphur, and potassium as well as Vitamins A, D, E, F and K.  There are two types of Irish moss, the flat moss, which is not as thick when it is boiled, and the coarse moss; the coarse moss is more popular of the two. When it is dried, the moss is parcelled and sold at a cost of $100 for a small bag weighing less than eight ounces. Recent studies have also found that Irish moss does, in fact, have some great anti-viral properties and can help fight the Influenza B and mumps viruses.Personally for me, Irish moss has a distinctive scent that we called "raw" in Jamaica; (smell like the sea) I rarely use it.

Isinglass: Fish gelatin obtained from sounds or swim bladders of fish such as the hake, cod, and sturgeon; used as a glue, a food substitute, and a clarifying agent.

2 tbsp. linseed

1 cup water to soak linseed

2 cups water to boil linseed

1/8 tsp. grated nutmeg

1/4 tsp. vanilla

Sweetened condensed milk

*Instead of using sweetened condensed milk, you can use almond milk, and sweeten with honey*.


Soak linseed into 1 cup of water for twenty minutes. After 20 minutes, the linseed will become somewhat soft. (Linseed is high in fibre and contains a gummy material called mucilage, both of which expand when they come in contact with water. They add bulk to stool and help it move more quickly through the intestines.)


Put a medium-size pot with two cups of water on high heat, bring water to a boil. Put the linseed into the pot along with the water and boil for 20 minutes uncovered.


Remove from heat. Strain-off the liquid into a container and allow to be cool.


You can discard the linseed, or you can put into the sun to dry and use another time


Pour the linseed liquid into a blender, add sweetened condensed milk and blend for a couple of seconds. Add the vanilla and nut meg, blend again for a couple of seconds. Add cubes of ice and blend for a couple of seconds. Drink immediately. Do not refrigerate.

You can use almond milk instead of condensed milk and sweeten with honey. So, in a blender you would put the linseed liquid, 1/4 cup of almond milk and the amount of honey to suit your taste,  vanilla,  nutmeg, ice cubes and blend. Linseed drinks is light and refreshing and also packed with fibre.

Linseed is good for constipation; soak linseed for 20 minutes then boil for 20 minutes. Strain and sweeten with sugar or honey.

Be careful how often you consume linseed because overuse can cause, weakness, dyspnoea, tachypnea, paralysis, and convulsions. Consume linseed at least once per month.
