Local Government Election Scheduled for February 26th

The highly anticipated local government election is scheduled for February 26, with Nomination Day set for February 8. Local Government Minister Desmond McKenzie announced these dates during a meeting convened for Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) local government candidates on Thursday afternoon.

JLP leader Andrew Holness, alongside constituency chairpersons, Members of Parliament, councillor candidates, and party officers, attended the announcement. The forthcoming election marks the end of a prolonged interval since the previous local government election, which took place on November 28, 2016.

This extended period has meant that the standard three-year term for incumbent councillors has stretched to over seven years due to multiple postponements. With the election now imminent, stakeholders are gearing up for a pivotal moment in Jamaica's local governance landscape.
