Shock Ruling: Vybz Kartel's Freedom Crushed Despite Winning Appeal – Bail Denied
Dancehall star Vybz Kartel and two of his three co-accused were denied bail in the Supreme Court on Thursday, May 30. Supreme Court Justice Andrea Thomas ruled that in the absence of a verdict or acquittal by the Privy Council, the charge of murder remains in effect for Kartel. Despite winning his appeal and having his conviction overturned in March, Kartel’s murder charge still stands, leading to the denial of bail. The habeas corpus application filed on their behalf was rejected, and their continued detention was deemed not in breach of the Constitution. The habeas corpus is a powerful legal tool, but it’s typically more applicable to detainees who are not formally charged with a crime
