Best Jamaican Style Roasted Breadfruit Recipe
Ingredients:
Preparation:
-
Harvest and Drain:
-
Pick the breadfruit a day before roasting to allow the stain to drain.
-
Remove the stem, then use a knife to make several slashes around the stem area. This helps the stain to drain properly.
-
Make an X-shaped slash at the bottom of the breadfruit.
-
-
Ripen Slightly (Optional):
-
Place the breadfruit face down in the sun for at least 4 hours. This optional step slightly ripens the breadfruit and enhances its flavor.
-
Roasting Method:
-
Place the breadfruit stem side down on a gas stove top. Roast for 10 minutes.
-
Turn the breadfruit and roast for 5 minutes on the next side. Continue turning every 5 minutes until the entire breadfruit is evenly roasted.
-
Finally, place the breadfruit bottom side down on the stove and roast for 10 minutes. Note that the top and bottom of the breadfruit take longer to roast as these areas contain the most stain.
-
Turn off the stove and allow the breadfruit to cool.
Peeling and Serving:
-
Once cool, peel the charred skin off the breadfruit.
-
Slice and serve as is, or pair with your favorite Jamaican dishes such as ackee and saltfish, steamed callaloo, or jerk chicken.
