Learn how to make crispy fried red tilapia, also known as freshwater fish in Jamaica. This easy Jamaican fried fish recipe ensures your fish is flavorful and crispy, perfect for a delicious meal. Follow this step-by-step guide for the best results.
Ingredients:
-
2 whole red tilapia (scaled and gutted)
-
2 tbsp salt
-
4 cups water
-
2 tbsp white vinegar
-
1 tbsp Maggi All-Purpose seasoning
-
1 tsp black pepper
-
¼ cup vegetable oil (for frying)
-
Paper towels (for draining excess moisture and oil)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Fish
-
Place the cleaned red tilapia into a container filled with a saltwater solution (2 tbsp salt to 4 cups water).
-
Let the fish soak in the salted water for 2 hours to enhance its flavor.
-
After 2 hours, remove the fish from the saltwater and rinse it with a mixture of white vinegar and water.
-
Drain and pat the fish dry thoroughly with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
Step 2: Season the Fish 5. Season the fish with Maggi All-Purpose seasoning and black pepper. Avoid using too many spices, as they can overpower the taste of the fish. 6. Line a container with paper towels, then place the seasoned fish on top to absorb any liquid that may gather. Keeping the fish dry ensures a crispier fry. 7. Let the fish marinate for at least 20 minutes.
Step 3: Fry the Fish 8. Heat ¼ cup vegetable oil in a pot over medium heat until hot but not smoking. 9. Use a paper towel to pat dry the fish once more before frying. 10. Carefully place the fish into the hot oil and fry each side for about 4 minutes if you prefer a crispy texture. 11. Remove from heat and place on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
Serving Suggestions: Serve your crispy fried red tilapia with festival, fried dumplings, bammy, or a side of steamed vegetables for a complete Jamaican meal.
