A Real Jamaican Breakfast: Fried-Up Saltfish and Mint Tea

Jamaican fry saltfish with boiled food

Not a Recipe, Just Real Talk

This is not a recipe post. I'm simply telling the world about Jamaican breakfast—what we eat and how we love it.

Today, I had fried-up saltfish with green peas and carrot. The green peas and carrot are optional, but they add a little color and sweetness that I like.

I paired that saltfish with some good old cooked dumplings, green bananas, and a piece of yellow yam. That kind of plate? That’s how we do it in Jamaica. Full belly, strong start to the day.

Black Mint Tea to Top It Off

No Jamaican breakfast is complete without tea. I topped off my meal with a hot cup of mint tea. Not just any mint—what we call black mint in Jamaica.

Now let me tell you: a lot of Jamaicans sweeten this particular mint tea with sweetened condensed milk, while some prefer it with brown sugar. Me? Depends on the mood.

Breakfast or Dinner?

In Jamaica, what we eat for breakfast can also be eaten for dinner. That plate of saltfish, dumpling, banana, and yam? Same thing you’ll find bubbling in the evening too.

That’s the beauty of Jamaican food. No strict rules. Just flavor, tradition, and heart.
